Frank Lloyd Wright's Unbuilt Cliffside Dwelling for VC Morris: An Architectural What-If

Image
Frank Lloyd Wright is celebrated for his visionary architecture, redefining the relationship between human-made structures and the natural landscape. One of his intriguing yet unbuilt projects was a cliffside dwelling designed for his client, VC Morris. Morris, an influential figure in San Francisco's art scene, is best known as the client for Wright's iconic Morris Gift Shop , a precursor to the Guggenheim Museum . But beyond that successful collaboration lay a captivating concept: a cliffside home that, had it been built, would have become a remarkable piece of Wright’s organic architectural legacy. The Vision Behind the Design Wright’s cliffside design for Morris embodied his philosophy of organic architecture, aiming to create a home that appeared to grow naturally from the cliff itself. He envisioned a structure that would blend seamlessly into its environment, echoing the bold curves and geometries that he would later refine for the Guggenheim. This unbuilt project ser...

Razzle Dazzle Camouflage

Image
A great description for Razzle Dazzle Camouflage can be found on  Wikipedia . It was extensively used by the English and American navy during WWI. The bizarre camouflage would break up the outline of the ship causing confusion to opponents targeting the vessels. Anon, photograph of the USS West Mahomet in dazzle camouflage, 1918. Iconic Building on Catalina Island

Image
The dominant and most iconic building on Catalina island is the casino in the city of Avalon. It's not really a casino but get its name from the italian word that means "gathering place" and it was built in 1929 during the depression. The structure was a world class building at the time built by William Wrigley Jr. And it must have been quite an event to steam over from the main land in Los Angeles and dance the night away in the upstairs ballroom. The lower room of the structure is a theater and contains ornate paintings and furniture. The structure has really became part of the form of the whole island and I couldn't imagine the island without the landmark. I really believe that is a true sign of a successful building. What makes Catalina so unique is that most of it has been set as a preservation to the natural environment. And only a small portion some 20% of the island has been set aside for human habitation and enjoyment. Catalina Island Casino C...

John Lautner Lecture Transcript

Image
Sci-Arc Media Archive video clip lecture on January 1, 1976 John Lautner- The Reason That I went into what Architecture When I was in college I Analyzed different professions and it Seemed as though many of them got into a rut. And since then, I've found Is that if you're really are a creative thinker then you can make any profession a creative one, but many of them tend to get into a specialty or a rut. I picked architecture as a profession, Which is non ending. I did not want to be at a dead end When I was fifty years old. So Now that I am over sixty I am still starting. So the design process is a very involved thing. In fact, it takes till your about forty before you have any kind of control or enough knowledge of architecture before you can really start to design. You may take a whack at it When your a student but it's a superficial and kind of empty or one sided whack. Because it cant Possibly Include Everything That is Necessary in a total design. So my de...
