AI Prompts for Architectural Renderings: From Sketch to Render

There is a common misconception that AI tools like Midjourney replace the need for architectural drawing. I disagree. While AI can generate imagery from thin air, the most professional results come from a hybrid workflow: Hand-draw the vision first, then use AI to render the intent.

Why the Sketch Matters

By using a hand-drawn sketch as an Image Prompt, you maintain control over the structural logic and perspective. You aren't just "rolling the dice" with a text prompt; you are providing the AI with a blueprint. This ensures that iconic elements—like the cantilevered roof of a Mid-century modern home—stay true to your design.

The Workflow: AI as Co-Pilot vs. AI as Pilot

There are two primary ways to approach this. You can use a Sketch-to-Render workflow to maintain strict design intent, or you can use Text-to-Image prompting to explore rapid-fire concepts from scratch. While I personally believe that "Organic Architecture" requires the specific, human touch of a site-specific sketch, both methods benefit from a structured prompting "formula."

To achieve the results seen in the examples below—both from my sketches and from creators like Linus Ekenstam—I use a "Dynamic Prompting" hierarchy. This ensures the AI doesn't just "guess," but follows a professional logic:

The Dynamic Prompting Formula

  1. The Publication Standard: Starting with "editorial photo from Dwell" to set a baseline for high-end photography.

  2. The Design DNA: Specifying the style, such as "Midcentury modern house," to help the AI interpret manual lines accurately.

  3. The Environment: Defining the setting—"on a cliff overlooking Los Angeles"—and the lighting, such as "morning sun."

  4. The Material Finish: Using modifiers like "8K architecture photography" or "style: pencil sketch" to dictate the final texture.
