SHEATS-GOLDSTEIN RESIDENCE

The Sheats-Goldstein Residence sits in Beverly Crest above Los Angeles — a cave carved from sandstone and open to the sky, designed by John Lautner in 1962 for Helen and Paul Sheats. Jim Goldstein purchased the house in 1972 and re-engaged Lautner to perfect it, a collaboration that continued until Lautner's death in 1994. That work was carried forward by Duncan Nicholson, and since 2015 by Conner & Perry Architects. In 2016 Goldstein gave the entire estate to LACMA as a promised gift, ensuring it will remain open to the public as a living work of architecture.

The construction program now encompasses the James Turrell Above Horizon Skyspace, rooftop infinity tennis court, Club James nightclub, offices, lap pool, guest house, theater, and an outdoor entertainment terrace. What follows is a curated reference list of the best coverage of the residence — from the 2013 construction buzz through the most recent press from 2024.
