Happy 101st Birthday John Lautner!




Architect John Lautner would have turned 101 years old on July 16, 2012. In celebration of this day I wanted to point out some of his major works in Architecture. These unique and innovative designs deserve the distinction as Organic Architecture Design based on the teachings of the Master Architect Frank Lloyd Wright, but unlike many of Wright's other apprentices was Lautner's ability to go further making the transition to Master Architect.

As part of an even last year celebrating John Lautner's 100th birthday the Lautner Foundation hosted an exhibition and tour of several of the homes in Los Angeles.

A Futuristic Modern Architecture Box (dubbed the Sky Tower) nestled in the surreal setting above the clouds in the (futurist post apocalyptic) movie Oblivion  (2013) written and directed by Joseph Kosinski . The home takes some obvious inspiration from the Stahl House aka Case Study # 22 by Architect Pierre Koenig . The home has some obvious improvements with the the extended helipad over the see through acrylic infinity pool. The foundation of the home is on a unbelievably thin single (steel?) column that seems to be unaffected by the wind throughout the movie. The Director Joseph Kosinski conceived of the sky tower design with early 3D modeling renderings that he made. Joseph Kosinski graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Architecture that explains the strong modern design elements in his work. I was recently reading an article from the September issue of 1956 House and Home and was astounded to see an interesting FLLW article with tips for the average home builder. As I was reading through the article I was realizing that those tips and advise were still just as pertinent today as it was in 1956. The particular house the article refers to is the Zimmerman house built in Manchester, New Hampshire. Bruce Goff's Ledbetter House

In 1948, Bruce Goff, a renowned Organic Architect, designed and constructed the Ledbetter House in Norman, Oklahoma. One of the most distinctive features of this unique home is its striking carport floating entry, which is supported by steel cables and provides both shelter and aesthetic interest. The Ledbetter House is a stunning example of Goff's Organic Architecture style, which emphasizes the harmonious integration of buildings with their natural surroundings. The house is situated on a wooded site, and Goff incorporated the landscape into the design of the home.
