Architecture Furniture pieces to the whole

Furniture is the forgotten detail of architecture that can provide unique finishing elements that can relate to the structure of the whole. At our office we take the time to be inventive by developing all types of furniture for our structures.

On the Goldstein project every design that is built is usually the amalgamation of up to a dozen designs more or less. The ability to review many options is very productive even if they do not become built form because they can become a study that may reemerge in a future design more polished. The best designs in architecture and furniture is those that use the true nature of the materials they are composed. By this I mean that if any element is made from metal that it should use its natural physical elements being tensile strength. Depending on how the form is manufactured the material metal should reflect its construction i.e. tube steel vs. precision cut metal.

The upper example is an aluminum and glass coffee table the metal plate has been water jet cut to precise shapes and sizes that were welded together so that they could act in tensile and use its form as a counter weight to cantilever the beveled glass in place without any mechanical fasteners. Its an example of the material working in a way it was truly developed and it also relates to the construction methods precisely. This piece is for sale and it has been limitedly produced but they type of construction lends to the ability for mass production and reduction of costs(think of this prototype as a functional piece of art).

The next examples are developments of furniture for the bar on the Goldstein project. These multiple designs are all schematic that may all be rejected or one could be selected and developed further and eventually become a built form. The key to all of these designs is the importance for the right piece of furniture to relate to the design of the bar that in turn is related to the structure of the whole.

Most architecture commercial or residential is not developed to its full potential. It has become a new occupation for interior designers to fill empty spaces that architects do not build out. This is another disconnection in architecture that exist due to an abundance of disregard for an ability of a building to relate to the small interior elements.

So for now it looks like this design is just getting started... stay tuned for a finished solutions some day.
