Let There Be LIGHT




James Turrell is an artist and a philosopher when it comes to his speciality light. BBC did a video on his work that premiers the Goldstein Skyspace and Roden Crater. James Turrell was awarded in 1984 with a genius award from the MacArthur Foundation for his work that shows "exceptional merit and promise for continued and enhanced creative work."

Goldstein Skyspace - "Above Horizon"
Goldstein Skyspace like many of Turrell's works is about observing the evening and morning sky through an opening inside a space created to perceive the natural light in the reality that it is presented. He saturates the sky room with bright displays of color and the sky changes; or our visual perception changes of the sky color based on the space in light displayed.

Roden Crater is an extinct volcano that Turrell has bought in his endeavor to transform the inner cone into a celestial sky oculus. His work and life have been devoted in part to building Roden Crater and it is has been an ongoing construction for the last 40 years and and it looks like a magnificent work of art on a scale with its grandeur. Unfortunately it is not yet open to the public and looks like a few more years before I'll get to experience the place for myself (see facebook page).

A Futuristic Modern Architecture Box (dubbed the Sky Tower) nestled in the surreal setting above the clouds in the (futurist post apocalyptic) movie Oblivion  (2013) written and directed by Joseph Kosinski . The home takes some obvious inspiration from the Stahl House aka Case Study # 22 by Architect Pierre Koenig . The home has some obvious improvements with the the extended helipad over the see through acrylic infinity pool. The foundation of the home is on a unbelievably thin single (steel?) column that seems to be unaffected by the wind throughout the movie. The Director Joseph Kosinski conceived of the sky tower design with early 3D modeling renderings that he made. Joseph Kosinski graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Architecture that explains the strong modern design elements in his work. I was recently reading an article from the September issue of 1956 House and Home and was astounded to see an interesting FLLW article with tips for the average home builder. As I was reading through the article I was realizing that those tips and advise were still just as pertinent today as it was in 1956. The particular house the article refers to is the Zimmerman house built in Manchester, New Hampshire. Kumiko Pattern

Traditional Japanese lattice partition were hand crafted wood screens that provided beautiful window or door dividers for Japanese architecture.
