Soviet Bus Stop

Image
Canadian photographer Christopher Herwig embarked on a unique journey across 14 former Soviet countries, capturing the eccentric and artistic bus shelters that were built during the Soviet era. These structures, located in remote places and often unnoticed, showcase a range of imaginative designs including UFOs, waves, and even octopuses. Herwig's fascination with these bus stops led him to photograph over 1,000 of them, resulting in a visually captivating project. He believes that these bus stops provided artists and architects a rare opportunity for self-expression under the restrictive Soviet regime. The project, documented in his book "Soviet Bus Stops," highlights the creativity and free spirit that emerged within a seemingly mundane architectural form. Despite having concluded his initial project, Herwig remains open to the possibility of reviving it in the future, expressing his ongoing fascination with these artistic creations. Referenced Links:
