Preserving Lautner's Legacy: The Spectrum of Stewardship

The Los Angeles Conservancy and the John Lautner Foundation, with the support of the Getty Conservation Institute, hosted this public panel to discuss recent work on restoring the unique iconic residences by legendary modern architect John Lautner. The panel was comprised of architects and residence owners from Los Angeles who discussed their unique views and approaches on sustaining the architect's built legacy.

This event which was hosted in conjunction with a year-long program entitled John Lautner Turns 100 which commemorates the centennial of the legendary architect. The Getty Conservation Institute provided support a documentary video on the panel program for viewing by the public.

The invited panelists were moderated by Los Angeles Conservancy Executive Director Linda Dishman:

Helena Arahuete, Principal, Lautner Associates; architect consultant to the Harvey Residence (1951)
Frank Escher, board member of the John Lautner Foundation; Principal, Escher GuneWardena Architecture; architect consultant to the Malin Residence (Chemosphere) (1960)
Mark Haddawy, current owner of the Harpel Residence (1956)
Michael LaFetra, board member of Los Angeles Conservancy; current owner of the Rawlins Residence (1980)
Ron Radziner, FAIA, Principal, Marmol Radziner; architect consultant to the Garcia Residence (1962)

A Futuristic Modern Architecture Box (dubbed the Sky Tower) nestled in the surreal setting above the clouds in the (futurist post apocalyptic) movie Oblivion  (2013) written and directed by Joseph Kosinski . I was recently reading an article from the September issue of 1956 House and Home and was astounded to see an interesting FLLW article with tips for the average home builder. As I was reading through the article I was realizing that those tips and advise were still just as pertinent today as it was in 1956. The particular house the article refers to is the Zimmerman house built in Manchester, New Hampshire. Bruce Goff's Ledbetter House

In 1948, Bruce Goff, a renowned Organic Architect, designed and constructed the Ledbetter House in Norman, Oklahoma. One of the most distinctive features of this unique home is its striking carport floating entry, which is supported by steel cables and provides both shelter and aesthetic interest. The Ledbetter House is a stunning example of Goff's Organic Architecture style, which emphasizes the harmonious integration of buildings with their natural surroundings.
